No autonomy. Poor leadership.

Pros

Great talent and hiring. Myself and my colleagues were mostly treated with kindness and respect. Onboarding was smooth. They worked hard to make the culture good with lunch groups and activities. There's fairly good connectivity for being a remote company.

Cons

1. There is a tight and small circle of trust among the leadership team, and it lacks experience or maturity. The Leadership Team is more interested in handcrafting the company (building rules and procedures, or “playing” corporate) than making the product better. For example at the company offsite, the LT spent 2 hours role playing the dangers of “gossiping” in the work place but did not reveal any pertinent updates, wins or future plans. Leadership is very concerned with the wrong things. ...... 2. The CEO is resistant to the experts around him. He often contradicts himself and refuses to offload responsibility. It's a sign that he's playing too many roles, many which he is unqualified to do. There is an inborn skepticism for all new hires, as if the CEO/subsequent leaders do not trust that employees have the company's best interests in mind. It's an unfortunate leadership style and inevitably drives attrition. Turnover is in fact high, but much of it is due to firing (which tells you where the problem lies). ..... 3. I have worked at many successful startups and Garner is by far the most bureaucratic. You are constantly met with red tape, making it hard to do your job well. No company will function optimally with this model, especially in an alleged "high growth" stage. Take your talents where you’ll be best able to use them and build. Other startups are looking to grow, rather than simmer.

We're sorry to hear about your perception of our leadership team and CEO. We can assure you that every decision is made with the intention of advancing our company and improving our product for our members, and that we work diligently to ensure everyone in the team feels included and valued. Our CEO is dedicated to our mission and is passionate about creating an environment that fosters growth and innovation. His commitment to juggling various roles within the organization stems from this dedication. In terms of bureaucracy, we aim to strike a balance between process and flexibility. We understand that as we grow, some structures may need to be reevaluated to ensure that we're supporting the creativity and effectiveness of all team members. We genuinely appreciate your feedback as it helps us identify areas where we can improve. We will take your comments into consideration as we continue to evolve and grow as a company

Pros

The relationships formed with coworkers were wonderful and supportive, that being said the relationships were as strong as they were due to the horrible working conditions and needing to find support to get through it. Kind of like the bonds soldiers make after going through a war together.

Cons

The product itself is horrible and ineffective for customers. The CEO has the lowest level of emotional intelligence of anyone in this type of leadership position that I have ever seen. I truly do not believe he cares for the well being of his employees in any capacity. The culture at this company is unbelievably toxic. Garner embraces and encourages a "call out" culture among employees which leads employees to feel isolated, hopeless and shamed. There is no regulation for peers being aggressive, disrespectful or malicious-- it is simply accepted. The lack of organization at this company is astounding. As an employee it feels you are set up to fail from your first day. Onboarding is nearly non-existent, and the training that is available is unhelpful and so outdated that it doesn't apply to current job expectations.

Lack of trust impedes the work

Pros

The product is genuinely helpful for customers and their end-users. Garner is also good at process documentation and sharing company updates. Employees get access to Garner, which is cool.

Cons

There is a pervasive lack of trust throughout many departments. This could be due to shorter tenures and rapid growth. I also suspect it is due to the feedback/transparency culture, where 360 feedback is shared in a spreadsheet for the entire company to view, which in theory is nice but in reality it encourages motivation through blame and shame. This lack of trust impedes work by constricting autonomy and prioritizing perfectionism. It inhibits the formation of genuine internal relationships, as most people are quite guarded. Other things that are concerning: -dearth of female leaders -"bait and switch" job descriptions -a GTM strategy that is convoluted, wordy, confusing -the individuals most successful at Garner seem to embody an almost robotic, relentless work ethic -employees are encouraged to dissect others' work in order to appear intelligent and engaged, as modeled by senior leadership -most people I encountered to felt a serious loss of confidence in themselves during their time at Garner -threat of retaliation for articulating concerns feels omnipresent
