Navajo Code Talkers Day honors the impact of Native American code talkers who served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. In remembrance of their contributions, SRP Employee Resource Group N.A.T.I.V.E. (Native Americans Together in Vision and Empowerment) hosted an event where Tempe Councilwoman Doreen Garlid gave some remarks. “When my grandfather and great uncles joined the Marines to serve as Navajo Code Talkers, it was only five years after they were punished for using their language at the Phoenix Indian School. National Code Talkers Day is our opportunity to learn about what they sacrificed for our country. We need to listen to their stories, learn the history and then share with others. It is the least that we can do.”
