On Jan. 11, SRP’s African American Cultural Committee Employee Resource Group hosted a panel about the significance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Read on for quotes from three of the employee panelists. “Dr. King’s impact was that he brought to the forefront the injustices that were done against African Americans," said Freddie Dobbins Jr., Senior Engineer. “Growing up a dark-skinned little girl in a very small town in Oklahoma, I finally felt through Dr. King’s speech I could dream beyond my past circumstances,” said Patricia Cook, Lead Customer Service Representative. “Dr. King was a catalyst to social and civil change who left a legacy of equality, justice and belonging for all people,” said Kisshell Wilson, Director of Water Information Technology Services.
A deep sense of cultural pride inspires Michelle Bigman, a Water Contract and Information Analyst in SRP’s Water Rights & Contracts department, to bring cultural awareness to SRP employees of all backgrounds in honor of Native American Heritage Month.
SRP proudly employs nearly 300 veterans and supports their shared experiences through an Employee Resource Group called SRP Vets. In honor of all veterans, SRP Vets hosted a special event for the entire company to hear from guest speaker Rose Mattie, former CW2 Black Hawk pilot and Special Operations Cultural Support Team member, who shared her perspective on service. "No matter if you have served one day or over 30 years, whether you volunteered or were drafted. YOU are a veteran and deserve to be recognized on this day. Happy Veterans Day!" SRP's Chief Executive Officer and General Manager Mike Hummel (pictured at center) received the University of Arizona College of Engineering 2022 Alumnus of the Year award on Friday, Oct. 28. Hummel, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1982, is a third-generation Wildcat. He has spent more than 40 years with SRP, beginning as an electrical engineer in the construction department and serving in several other positions within the company until his 2018 promotion to General Manager and CEO. As his career progressed, Hummel also found time to serve on both the UA Foundation’s Board of Trustees and the UA Engineering Industry Partner Board.
SRP Employee Resource Group N.A.T.I.V.E. celebrated National Navajo Code Talkers Day with a virtual talk by Michael Smith, a Marine Corps veteran who is also a descendant of Navajo Code Talker Samuel “Jesse” Smith Sr., 4th Marine Division. Smith has dedicated his life to serving and honoring Navajo Code Talkers such as Thomas H. Begay, one of only four living Code Talkers, who also joined SRP’s virtual event to share his story.
Lora Dal Bo, an Executive Assistant at SRP, spends much of her free time volunteering in the community to help others feel a sense of belonging. She also serves as the Vice Chair of SRP Proud, one of the company’s 10 Employee Resource Groups. Read more about Lora as we celebrate #PrideMonth.
Karoni Forrester’s father served in Vietnam. He never made it home. This experience shaped her life and cemented a decades-long affiliation with National League of POW/MIA Families — an organization dedicated to making sure the remains of POWs and those listed as MIA — finally come home. Forrester shared her powerful story during a virtual event on May 11 held by SRPVETS, our Employee Resource Group, in honor of Memorial Day.

Meet Debbie Camarena, a Working Foreman in SRP’s metering group.
